FAQs

What are the advantages of Conservation Quality Framing (CQF)? What are you trying to achieve with it?

The advatage of CQF is to prolong the life of your artwork using the best possible materials and techniques. By using materials that will not damage your artwork and techniques that are easily reversible, we are committed to ensuring the longevity of your artwork.
What are the most common mistakes made when framing works on paper? What sort of problems can poor quality framing cause?
The most common mistakes in framing works on paper are:
  • Using mats or backing boards that contain lignin. Lignin causes paper to become embrittled and to discolor upon exposure to heat and light.
  • Using acidic and/or adhesive tapes in direct contact with artwork.
  • Adhering artwork to its backing (it should be correctly hinged).
  • Using MDF boards in the frame package (because the preservative used in MDF produces off-gasses that inevitably cause damage to your artwork. These off-gasses can cause damage even after an acid/lignin free barrier has been fitted!
  • Fitting artwork in direct contact with the glazing material will cause damage to the artwork if condensation occurs.
These framing mistakes can potentially cause damage such as acid burn, aggressive glue residues, discolouration, staining & foxing. Foxing shows up as brown spot stains typically caused by metal impurities and micro organisms in paper which increase the level of acidity. Employing the services of our conservators to rectify this damage can be costly and in many cases the damage may be irreversible. Poor quality framing is the most common cause of damage to artwork!
Are you able to fix other people’s mistakes?
Sometimes! Each case is different and needs to be assessed by us. Our conservators’ goal is to halt further deterioration in the artwork and they have achieved many amazing rescues for our clients! See some examples of works we have treated
Is conservation quality framing more expensive than regular framing? If so, why?
Conservation framing is generally more expensive than decorator framing because it uses higher quality materials and the techniques required are more time consuming.
 Who uses conservation quality framing?
